Art and History of Hand-Tied Bouquets

Posted on Monday, 06-Mar-2023

Flowers hold a significance so meaningful, it elates you. Be it to adorn a special occasion with simplicity, a romantic token of love, a heartfelt apology or just about any reason to pamper your loved ones, there’s a bloom for every celebration. What’s better, there are myriad bouquets crafted for these occasions - Posy Bouquet, Pomander Bouquet, Composite Bouquet and more.

But the one that particularly stood out in the floristry world was the hand-tied bouquet. So what are they? Simplistic yet extravagant, it’s an assortment constructed with individual flower stems that are placed in one’s hand and arranged. Once complete, the florist ties the stems together which can then be fitted in a vase or used as a hand-held bouquet.

Even though the bouquets are in a league of their own now, hand-tied bouquets date back to the 14th century when the uber-rich women used to carry the original nose gays (small clusters of flowers wrapped in moss) to keep unpleasant odors away. They’d carry them on the streets to make sure all they smell are the pleasing scent of fresh flowers.

As of today, popular flowers that are used in hand-tied bouquets are - Alsotromeria, Carnations, Trachelium and Iris.

And its use spreads far and wide across the country. Not only are they used as wholesome gifts for memorable celebrations like birthdays, anniversaries, corporate functions or as a special symbol of recovery for patients but also as decor elements and unique assortments held by the bride to complement her traditional attire during wedding functions.

Alongside, the up-and-coming DIY culture encourages artists and budding floral enthusiasts to adopt hand-tied bouquets as home projects too. Not only do they ideate the design from scratch but also give their own extraordinary spin to this craft using beautiful blooms, stems, ribbons and more.
